Do you dream of one day being able to stop, sit down and spend the rest of your life relaxing? It’s a dream that many share.
I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that the world never stops turning, the good news is that there is real beauty in that movement. When we lived in the Falkland Islands I was forever running outside to take photographs of the stunning sunsets and sunrises. And I realized that what made them so special was that each moment I was capturing was fleeting and would never be repeated. We walked on stunning and empty beaches and it struck me that I was the only person to see this moment. How utterly wonderful.
Look at the trees in autumn. That golden hue they’re cloaked in is just part of the fluid movement from green to bare. It’s the firework display at the end of the concert, the preparation for another concert. When is the perfect moment? When the first leaves change colour or when all the leaves have changed but quite a few are now underfoot making that lovely scoof sound as you walk through them?
On a recent coaching retreat we discussed the word balance. I’ve always believed in trying to achieve a level of balance. What I really love though is balanced movement: that flow from one position of brief poise to the next. Dancers capture it perfectly. And sports programmes take great delight in the slow motion shots of sporting genius: think Usain Bolt crossing the finish line, Brian O’Driscoll breaking through the opposition defence.
All I’m saying is that it’s the static we think of but the real beauty is in the change. Think of that next time you think that a world that never changes again is nirvana.
If this blog has struck a chord with you – no pun intended but, come to think of it, the humble chord is a beautiful mix of notes in harmony all caused by strings vibrating together – look out for the newsletter I’m going to create next week. Wendy keeps telling me I can’t change the world. I don’t need to. The world is changing itself. All I wish is that I could help people journey in harmony with it. I can’t do it alone. Please would you help me spread the word? Look out for the newsletter and sign up if you’re interested and drop a line to others. In the meantime I’d love to hear your comments on my FB page Inflow Performance or the group page, Breaking Free. Speak soon.
Hope it’s been moving.
